What changed

Walter Clayton Jr. is a Maverick, not merely a reported target. Dallas announced Wednesday that it signed the second-year guard to a two-way contract after he cleared waivers from Memphis.

The move fills the two-way opening created when Dallas waived John Poulakidas. Clayton, the No. 18 pick in the 2025 draft, averaged 7.8 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds across 69 rookie games split between Utah and Memphis.

A two-way deal gives Dallas a developmental look without using a standard roster spot. It does not promise Clayton immediate rotation minutes, and he would need a standard-contract conversion to be eligible for play-in or postseason games. The practical next step is seeing where Dallas assigns him and how quickly his ball handling earns a place behind the main guards.

OUR INTERPRETATION

Why Dallas fans care

Interpretation: Dallas is buying a low-cost second look at recent first-round talent. Clayton’s draft slot is context, not proof; his decision-making, shooting and defense in actual Mavericks minutes will determine whether the opportunity grows.
