What changed

Houston intends to spread the opening-night work. Ime Udoka told reporters the Rockets plan to begin with a 10-man rotation, using their depth while managing the early workload around a demanding schedule.

Udoka also said Reed Sheppard will be a major part of the plan despite the returns of veteran guards Fred VanVleet and Marcus Smart. That gives Houston another shooting threat inside a deeper backcourt than Dallas saw for much of last season.

For the Mavericks, the test extends beyond surviving the first unit. A long Houston rotation can keep size, pressure and shooting on the floor across substitution patterns, making the quality of Dallas’ own bench possessions important from the start.

OUR INTERPRETATION

Why Dallas fans care

Interpretation: A 10-man rotation in October is not necessarily a playoff blueprint. For one opening night, though, it gives Houston more ways to change matchups and asks Dallas’ second unit to stay organized without relying on Kyrie Irving or Cooper Flagg to rescue every possession.
