What changed
Cooper Flagg did not ease back into the lineup. After missing Saturday’s home opener with a mild left shoulder sprain, he returned with 29 points, 11 assists and six rebounds, scoring 12 in the fourth quarter as Dallas beat Miami 113-109.
The Mavericks had to solve the game twice. Miami built a 12-point lead in the second quarter, but Dallas closed the half on a 17-4 run to lead 53-52. The Heat moved back in front entering the fourth before Flagg took over late; Andrew Wiggins’ potential go-ahead three did not fall with 31 seconds left, and Flagg’s driving layup with 10 seconds remaining supplied the final margin.
This was not a one-man escape. P.J. Washington added 20 points and nine rebounds, Kyrie Irving returned with 18 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Walter Clayton Jr. gave Dallas 15 points off the bench. Giannis Antetokounmpo answered with 29 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists, but Miami fell to 0-4 while Dallas reached 2-2.
What matters next is whether Dallas can carry the late-game organization into Wednesday’s home test against Oklahoma City. The Heat made the Mavericks recover from two separate deficits; this time, Dallas had enough creation and poise to finish the recovery.
OUR INTERPRETATION
Why Dallas fans care
Basketball interpretation: the value was not simply Flagg’s scoring total. Dallas repeatedly used his passing to organize possessions, then trusted him to finish the game. That is analysis of the observed performance, not a prediction about future results.
