What changed

Dallas has spent most of the preseason evaluating fragments. Friday against Atlanta is supposed to be the first look at something closer to the whole. Dusty May said the finale will be the Mavericks’ closest preseason approximation of a regular-season game, with more of the normal rotation available.

Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg will start together at American Airlines Center. P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford and Zaccharie Risacher are the likely other starters—the same five Dallas used in Sunday’s 132-115 win over Houston in Macao.

May’s checklist is more useful than the final score. He wants better offensive rhythm, connected defense and fewer easy baskets after breakdowns. Atlanta offers a different test: Dyson Daniels and Lu Dort can pressure the ball, while the Hawks can mix the switching Houston used with the more conservative coverages Dallas saw from New Orleans.

The preseason has already shown how different Dallas looks when Irving organizes possessions and Flagg supplies another decision-maker. Friday is the last chance to see whether that structure holds for a longer stretch before the games begin to count Wednesday in Houston.

OUR INTERPRETATION

Why Dallas fans care

Interpretation: The most important evidence will come from the first-unit process, not the exhibition result. Watch whether Dallas enters actions cleanly against pressure and whether the defense covers the second mistake after an aggressive play fails.
