What changed

Kyrie Irving’s comeback reached the regular season Wednesday. In his first game that counted since tearing the ACL in his left knee on March 3, 2025, he scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 24 minutes.

Houston did not ease him back in. The Rockets sent two defenders at Irving in screen actions, forcing him to process pressure with a reshaped Dallas group. Irving said the early double-teams surprised him and that he needed to attack them more aggressively.

The game itself went badly: Houston won 128-110 after a 38-12 second quarter. Still, Irving’s efficient scoring and the attention he drew showed why his return can change the floor for Cooper Flagg and the rest of Dallas’ creators.

The next question remains workload and rhythm, not whether one efficient night proves durability. Dallas plays again Friday at Indiana, and the useful signal will be how Irving and the Mavericks turn defensive attention into organized advantages.

OUR INTERPRETATION

Why Dallas fans care

Interpretation: Irving’s 6-of-9 line was encouraging, but the stronger team-level signal was Houston treating him as a threat immediately. Dallas now has to convert that respect into cleaner possessions instead of asking the return itself to solve the offense.
